Module 8: Activity 3: Pros and Cons of Computer Labs

The computer lab because of its layout does not generally cater to collaboration and it may pose limited access in the sense that it does not cater to learning anywhere, any time.  However, most times each student who uses the lab at a particular time gets access to a machine and since most schools are cash-strapped this is the way that they take instead of investing in many computers for the classrooms.  To manage the lab well the teacher needs to ensure that clear instructions are given and students should behave in a respectful and responsible manner.

Module 8: Activity 2: Learning in ICT-enabled classrooms

Emerging technologies are changing today's classroom.  Available in the enabled classroom are many resources, including on demand video libraries, interactive software and gadgets, computers and LCD projectors, Web 2.0 tools, audio and video creation tools, digital imaging, e-campuses.

Some pros of the enabled classroom include:
  • students are able to work at their own pace and be in control of their own learning
  • they have access to class materials and can engage in just in time learning
  • they get extra help in subjects that are difficult for them
  • they are comfortable asking teachers questions and they receive more attention from teachers
  • they can easily share ideas with their classmates.
  • teachers are able to teach across the curriculum and engage students in project based learning
  • parents are involved in students learning
Some cons include
  • students need to be self motivated and make sure that they stick to deadlines
  • when multitasking, students need to be careful that they do not become distracted
  •  lack of funds to cater to upgrades or wear and tear
  • teachers may not be adequately trained to use the tools/resources.
A new term I have encountered is blended learning, that is, combining the traditional face-to-face classroom instruction with online instruction.  Educators can therefore look at traditional classrooms in new ways.

Module 8 - Managing Learning and Teaching with ICT

Activity 1 - Classroom Management

Having gone through this activity, it was reinforced that when students are meaningfully engaged, the classroom is well managed.  For the classroom to be effective and run smoothly there needs to be rules, routines, trust and student ownership. Teachers should

  •             Make rules clear and discuss with students why they are necessary.
  •             Know their students’ names, learning styles, interests
  •             Have a variety of ways of communication
  •             With students design a safe, friendly classroom environment
  •             Use Socratic questioning and authentic assessment.

The same principles apply when managing the classroom which is ICT integrated.

Managing Learning and Teaching with ICT and ICT planning for schools

Activity 0

I am Rosemarie Roberts from the twin island state of Antigua and Barbuda in the heart of the Caribbean.

Having embarked on the CCTI course almost two years ago, I have leaned so much.  As I complete the final modules, I look forward to continued growth.
